Code of Ethics and Professional Standards

This Code of Ethics and Professional Standards aims to assist and support Emmett Practitioners to deliver effective health care within an ethical framework.

Duty of Care

It is the Emmett Practitioners primary professional duty of care to assist their clients within the scope of their training, and circumstances of the client’s condition.

All practitioners must maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and duty of care to the client and never knowingly undertake any action or treatment that would adversely affect the health of a client or the credibility of the Emmett Technique. Fundamental to the technique is providing compassionate care for the client with integrity and respect for the client as an individual.

It is the Emmett Practitioners responsibility to ensure they maintain current First Aid certification so they are able to fulfil their duty of care in an emergency situation.

Practitioners must have respect for the views of their clients irrespective of age, race, sex, marital or parental status, physical features, impairments, religious and/or political beliefs or activities, culture or social standing.

The client’s treatment options must be based upon their needs and the best available information rather than being influenced by financial or other gain of the practitioner. Practitioners must respect the right of the client to make their own decisions regarding their health care.

It is the practitioner’s responsibility to ensure they are medically, physically and psychologically fit to see clients.

Referral

Emmett Practitioners must recognise the limits to their own skills and competence and refer the client when it is in the client’s best interests.

In the process of referring a client ensure several choices of therapists are provided to the client where possible. Reasonable steps must be taken to ensure that the practitioners being referred to have the qualifications and experience necessary to provide care for the client.

Upon receiving a referral from a medical practitioner this referral is to the Practitioner not the clinic as the doctor can be held responsible for the outcome.

Insurance

It is the individual Emmett Practitioners’ responsibility to source and maintain an up to date Professional Indemnity Insurance policy that best meets their specific needs for their country/state location. The Practitioner is to make their own investigations to relevant professionals in reference to their own insurance requirements. Once at therapist level (end of module 6), Professional Indemnity Insurance coverage is mandatory for all Emmett Practitioners.

Advertising

Advertising can be useful to inform the general public of practitioner services and educating them on the Emmett Technique. All advertisements must conform to the relevant consumer protection legislation and other applicable legislation in your region. Care must be taken to accurately represent the technique. The Emmett Technique treats pain and discomfort. It does not treat specific disorders and diseases. The correct wording is, “It may assist……”

Emmett Practitioners must at no time take part in or promote any activity that will reflect improperly or denigrate the standing of the Emmett Technique or Emmett Therapists.

The aim of any advertising should be to raise the awareness and profile of the Emmett Technique within the community.

This applies across all mediums of advertising including social media.

Privacy

Emmett Practitioners treating clients must display and adhere to an up to date privacy policy that complies with the Privacy laws in their country of practice. In Australia this is the 13 Australian Privacy Principles contained within the amended version of the 1988 Privacy Act. These principles stipulate how personal client information is to be managed.

Confidentiality

ALL client details must be kept confidential, unless the law requires the release of their information or the written consent of the client has been obtained. Practitioners must ensure client records are kept in a secure location that only authorised people have access to.

Records are to be retained as per the legislation in your region of practice. For Australian practitioners this is for a minimum of 7 years from the last appointment or where the client is under 18 years old, until they reach 25 years of age.

Informed Consent / Governing Health & Hygiene Directives

Informed Consent is a client/potential client’s voluntary decision to determine the health care most appropriate for them upon understanding the benefits and any risks involved in any proposed treatment. Clients should be aware of the fee schedule for treatment prior to the commencement of any treatment.

Emmett Practitioners must obtain informed consent before treatment is undertaken.

In providing care for children and young people ensure parental consent has been obtained. In providing care for children and young people ensure parental consent has been obtained.

As a professional therapist you have a responsibility to yourself and community to make an informed decision and abide by the recommendations and directives of your governing health authority in your country or regional area.

Respond to the advice of authorities accordingly and implement measures that comply.

Please check with your governing health authorities for further details and updates.

There are ongoing research and data collection projects currently being undertaken in Australia and throughout the world. These vary from research projects lead by teams of Physiotherapists in private practice through to hospital based research projects.

These projects, together with the continued data collection in clinic and in the field at sporting events, ensure that exciting times are ahead in the future of the Emmett Technique.

Other projects include:

An international data collection project called "Degrees of Difference". Enthusiastic Emmett Practitioners from all over the globe have welcomed the worldwide team effort and are actively collecting data that is being collated by the Australian Head Office.

Emmett Technique versus the Foam Roller Research - BSc Honors student recently submitted this research as part of her degree at Queens University Belfast. Rugby union players were separated into 3 groups: Emmett Technique, foam roller and control. Significant increase (70%) in range of movement was shown when using the Emmett Technique, and foam rollering was shown to have no significant effect. Click here to read the full report.

Ross Emmett - The Man behind the Technique

Ross Emmett, the founder of the EMMETT Technique, was born in Australia in 1945. Today he lives and works in Townsville on its North East coast. He has been in clinical practice since 1981, treating over 100 clients a week and now travels throughout the world lecturing and holding seminars on his unique insights into bodywork.

Ross is a gifted and dynamic practitioner and instructor in many therapies including

  • Therapeutic Massage since 1983
  • Bowen Therapy from 1988
  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Acutely aware of all of the subconscious triggers for healing Ross is also a qualified Hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner and he uses all his skills in his treatments to gain the best possible outcome for his clients. He has a unique and special gift that allows him to see each client’s needs at any moment, to know what to do and to adapt so that the treatment is individually tailored. This "Chameleon" approach has long been the major success in Ross’ technique and produces outstanding results.

What is unique and unusual about the EMMETT Technique is that Ross developed it long before he had any formal bodywork training. Highly intuitive with incredible observational skills, his varied upbringing, experiences and interests, as well as his dyslexia have all, he believes, contributed to the therapy that is today “The EMMETT Technique”.

Key experiences which have contributed to the development of the EMMETT Technique

  • 18 months in an orphanage at the age of 7

  • 10 years in amateur boxing
  • 5 years in animal research
  • Dog Trainer and Senior Dog Obedience Judge
  • 2 years as a Maximum Security Prison Officer
  • 15 years as a rigger in the Mount Isa mines
  • Over 35 years as a Remedial Therapist

Ross developed and used his techniques on animals long before he even considered trying them out on their two legged friends. His first clinic was conducted after hours, having worked a full day in the mines in Mount Isa, Queensland.

Today Ross’ clinic is in Townsville. He works alongside, and has been referred to by over 70 doctors and medical professionals. Their respect for Ross’ ability and technique and his for theirs has developed into a close and long lasting working relationship where Ross’ opinions will often be sought before surgical intervention is considered. Through the support and respect of his medical colleagues Ross was one of the first massage therapists in Australia to be registered for medical rebates. In this association with the medical establishment he enjoys a truly unique situation for a complementary therapist.

Ross brought his method to England in 2007. Since then his technique has gone global and courses are now run in over 40 countries around the world. More and more countries are hearing about EMMETT and inviting Ross to widen his travels and share the technique.

About the EMMETT Technique

The EMMETT Technique

The EMMETT Technique is a unique form of body therapy

It involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points, referred to as “Emmett points”. The points are not the same as traditional trigger points or acupressure points or any other points described in any other therapy.

The pressure required to stimulate the EMMETT points does not need to be firm or painful. “No pain no gain” has no place in EMMETT Technique philosophy.

Internationally Recognised Muscle Release Technique

The EMMETT Technique may assist with:

  • Relieving discomfort

  • Improving body movement
  • Aiding relaxation
  • Improving quality of life
Key features of EMMETT Technique treatments:
  • Accurate and fast assessments of body imbalances
  • Can be done sitting, lying or standing
  • Client can be either fully clothed or with some outer layers of clothing removed
  • Suitable for everyone from babies, during pregnancy, for the elderly and everyone in between

The EMMETT Therapist is skilled in the art of applying:

  • the right amount of pressure
  • in the right direction
  • for the right amount of time

It is this combination of elements, unique to each individual, which creates the desired physical change.

Although often combined with other techniques, the EMMETT Technique is an efficient and effective therapy on its own.

What does an EMMETT treatment involve?
  • Clients can be treated seated, standing or lying down.
  • It can be a standalone treatment or combined with other techniques.
  • The treatment can be applied directly to the skin or done through clothing.
  • Sessions can last anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes if the EMMETT Technique is used alone – longer if combined with a relaxing massage or other modality.

How does it work?

The EMMETT Technique is an understanding of the body’s response to light touch. It has been suggested that the body reacts in a similar way to the workings of a touch-screen. Small sensors allow access to the brain via the therapists’ touch. As well as the ability to directly influence muscle action, these points may have a memory and emotional attachment.
It is suggested that the EMMETT Technique may interact with the body as described in the science of Critical Point Analysis which identifies that...
  • “In any highly complex system there is a specific, critical point at which the smallest input will result in the greatest change”
  • For example a light touch on a small cog can halt the largest engine.
  • The EMMETT Technique Therapist can be compared to a body electrician who has the knowledge to locate these critical points and re-set them with the correct stimulation.
  • The stimulation is registered by the receiver’s nervous system and their brain responds by sending new instructions back to affect the physical state of the localized area.
  • The result is often instantaneous physical change.
  • Special language skills are incorporated to reinforce and anchor the positive physical changes greatly enhancing the outcome.

The EMMETT Technique was formally launched in 1999 and expanded internationally in 2007.

It has been growing in popularity ever since and has proved to have wide appeal as therapists, medical and exercise professionals across many modalities have completed the EMMETT Technique Practitioner training program.

Symptoms which have been relieved:

  • Neck and shoulder restriction
  • Lymphatic congestion and breathing
  • Migraines or cluster headaches
  • Abdominal cramps and bowel discomfort
  • Persistent heel and foot pain
  • Headaches, dizziness and sinus congestion
  • Back and hip discomfort Knee and ankle restrictions
  • Discomfort during pregnancy
  • Fluid retention

And much, much more!

Emmett Practitioners are highly adaptable to the needs of their clients. The motto of the ‘Chameleon Approach', is that an Emmett therapist has the ability to assess and tailor the treatment according to the specific needs and beliefs of each client.
